One of our guests at The Old School House travelled to Donovaly to start a hike mostly along the ridgeline of the Low Tatras (Nízke Tatry). It is a five day hike (or so the guides say). Here are the trip notes and map of the route.
Nízké Tatry Ridge
- Length - approximately 95km
- Highest point Ďumbier - 2043
- Start - Donovaly, Finish- Telgárt
- Duration - 4-6 days
- Red tourist markings - known also as SNP trail
- What you'll definitely need to take - tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, raincoat, suncream,
cash (EUR), food for multiple days
- DAY 1- Donovaly - Hiadelské sedlo - (10km - 3h) There is easy train connection to Ružomberok, then in front of train station there are buses going to Donovaly Hiadelské sedlo - basic shelter for sleeping, max 15 persons
- DAY 2 - Hiadelské sedlo - Útulna Ďurková (18km, 7h) Útulna Ďurková is fairly good equipped mountain hut with a landlord who can serve you soup, beer, breakfast etc. Sleeping is still basic and costs about €7
- DAY 3 - Útulna Ďurková - Čertovica (26km, 8,5h) You can make this stage shorter, there is a possibily to sleep in mountain hut - chata M.R.Štefánika (really spatious and modern, with pub, bathrooms, private or shared rooms) Or go to Čertovica, where is mountain hut of Mountain Rescue Service which offer share rooms for 20EUR per person. Food is also available. Better to call there ahead
- DAY 4 - Čertovica - útulna Andrejsková (9 - 10h - 28km) Útulna Andrejsková is a small cosy mountain hut with landlord (similar to útulna Ďurková), where you can sleep on the floor, food and drinks are also available there. Cost is €10
- DAY 5 - útulna Andrejsková - Telgárt (19km 7h) From Telgart, there is bus connection direction to Poprad or famous local train to Magercany, than in Magercany you are on main railway leads to Poprad-Košice
