Your first view of Lake Mara could be as you approach Liptovský Mikuláš by train or on the motorway. Around 22 square kms it is often referred to as the Sea of Liptov. With several beaches, a marina and numerous approaches through forests Lake Mara has lots to offer for any holidaymakers and sporting enthusiasts. After dark fishermen's lights dot the waters edge. During the day boats launch and sail from many ramps around the lake and the Liptov Marina. The marina boasts some a high end restaurant, accommodation and a gym.
Actually a reservoir with a large dam to the west The River Váh enters close to Liptovský Mikuláš end exits at the dam as it heads west across Slovakia.
Close to the dam there is the archaeological museum at Havránok and one of the quieter beaches with the view of the Church of St. Mary (Kostol Panny Márie). The busiest beach (which has a small entrance fee) has bars and fast food restaurants and is located near to Liptovský Trnovec. Camping Mara is also located adjacent to this beach.
There are other places to camp and enjoy the lake plus water parks close to each end of the lake at Tatralandia and Bešeňová.
