Finding a mountain home ... The search that began in 2001 is now fast becoming reality. Firstly in Chile I was put off for a number of reasons including the distance from the UK and possible need to return home at short notice.
In 2006 on my second visit to Slovakia, and my first visit to the Tatras Mountains, my interest in properties in the Liptov region started. On my return some eight years later and after getting to know the area better (particularly the ski resort of Jasna Chopok) I again started to look into making a purchase. It took a couple of years to find the right property.
Currently taking up most of my time this project to renovate the former local village school is a dream in the making.
Many years ago I had attempted to buy some land in Chile at my favourite ski resort, formerly Termas de Chillán. It proved too risky to trust with such an investment. Also being so far from home could become an issue later. A friend who is fluent in Spanish did purchase some land that was quite simply unsuitable for it's proposed purpose.
I finally completed my purchase in Slovakia in July 2016 some ten years after the first consideration.
From a derelict building with no services the school house is now more than comfortable and I have lots of visitors. The work is ongoing and will be for many years. Whilst managing the project I still get to spend a lot of time at the house and in the Tatras Mountains.
